Dr. Weston A. Price was a dentist who traveled the Dr. Weston A. Price was a dentist who traveled the world in order to find what the source of dental issues- tooth decay, crooked/crowded teeth, etc. What he discovered was these dental issues were just one small piece of physical degeneration in the body. He traveled the world to discover those who consumed an ancestral, nutrient-dense diet, did not have the same dental issues, nor physical degeneration. He discovered that The root of this physical degeneration had a common theme: nutritional depletion passed down from generation to generation. In his travels, He discovered that in the healthiest peoples, special attention went towards preparing future parents for conception. In fact, many tribes required a period of pre-marital nutrition, leading to nourished mothers and fathers, impacting nutritional health for generations. In her book “Deep Nutrition,” Dr. Catherine Shanahan had similar findings when applying Dr. weston a price’s principles to modern-day society. The bottom line: Preparing the body for pregnancy through nutrition and lifestyle for an extended period of time matters.
In her incredible book Real Food for Fertility, re In her incredible book Real Food for Fertility, registered dietician Lily Nichols states that while many are quick to turn to medical interventions in order to address infertility, there are many nutritional and lifestyle changes that can be made first in order to improve chances of conception🌱⁣ ⁣ This is such a big statement, but it is absolutely true📣 ⁣ With rising infertility rates around the country, the question needs to be asked- what factors are causing infertility to rise?⁣ ⁣ While here are a lot of environmental factors out of our control, research is showing that there are actually a lot of things that we can control and change🌼⁣ ⁣ I want to stress that this is not the fault of anyone experiencing fertility issues. This is the fault of a broken system that has perpetuated incorrect nutrition and lifestyle advice based on misguided notions and poorly done research from the past. ⁣ ⁣ This is exciting though. It means there are changes we can make to improve chances of natural conception before turning to interventions such as IVF⬇⬇⬇⁣ ⁣ I like to look at these changes through the lens of addressing the different foundations that support balance and health in the body. ⁣ ⁣ When we support:⁣ 1) DIGESTION⁣ 2) BLOOD SUGAR REGULATION⁣ 3) STRESS⁣ 4) SLEEP/CIRCADIAN RHYTHM⁣ 5) NUTRIENT DENSE DIET⁣ ⁣ We can support the healing of the mechanisms of reproduction that lead to improved chances of conception. Here’s why⬇️⬇️ Leaky gut syndrome shifts physiologic (normal and healthy) immune functions at the beginning of pregnancy to a pathologic issue as increased inflammatory markers lead to an overreactive immune system💥 This overreactive immune system can cause complications in both pregnancy and birth, ranging from early pregnancy loss, premature rupture of membranes, to preeclampsia. Every person has individual nutrient needs based o Every person has individual nutrient needs based on their stage in life. While the overarching themes are the same, it’s important to not take a supplement simply because someone else said it’s good for you. When considering supplementation, make sure to consider current stressors, previous stressors, current lifestyle, the stage you were at in life things, you are planning to do or take on in the next year, or even consider nutrients you know you are not getting from the food you eat. The amazing thing about food is that when it is good quality food, it will contain the perfect balance of specific nutrients that work together inside the body. That is why I love a food first approach, with targeted supplementation based on individual need. Did you know that charting your cycle can be very Did you know that charting your cycle can be very beneficial when preparing for pregnancy⬇️⬇️ And it’s for more than just the fact that when you learn to chart your cycle you can get off of birth control much sooner in order to restore fertility💃 Charting your cycle can give a lot of insight into hormone health and what needs the most support. For example, you can learn a lot about progesterone levels through the length of your luteal phase-which can be detected very simply through charting🧮 You will also be able to key into your fertile window as when you chart your cycle you are able to detect what days are fertile and when you are approaching ovulation 🥚 finally learning how to chart your cycle leaves to body literacy where you are in tune with exactly what is happening in your reproductive system. I’ve been seeing a ton of posts lately about mag I’ve been seeing a ton of posts lately about magnesium and the wonders of it and how everyone should go start supplementing with all its different types right now🤔 I agree that magnesium is an absolutely essential mineral to just about every aspect of health, we shouldn’t just supplement it blindly📢 This is because minerals do not work in isolation. In fact, minerals can actually deplete other minerals when we are not careful with how we supplement these minerals (how many time can I say “mineral” in this post🤣). Well, I’m not saying to immediately ditch all the magnesium supplementation, what I am saying is it is important to be aware of how magnesium interact with sodium and calcium among other minerals✨✨ If we are supplementing with a ton of magnesium, but disregarding sodium, even to the point of prioritizing, a low sodium diet, this could actually be pretty detrimental to health⬇️⬇️ In fact, the body might struggle to absorb magnesium more because sodium is essential for the creation of stomach acid. If our sodium stores are used up because of the mass intake of magnesium without also prioritizing sodium, the body will not be as supported to produce stomach acid, which is key in the digestive process. When digestion is off, nutrients like minerals will not be absorbed as well😱 Similarly, magnesium can deplete calcium if we are not careful. I do not recommend calcium supplementation, it is important to remember that we should prioritize calcium rich foods in the diet when supplementing with magnesium. (Who am I kidding? We should always prioritize calcium rich foods😅) All that to say, this is just a gentle reminder that minerals do not work in isolation, so it’s important to prioritize a nutrient dense diet filled with all the minerals that work hand in hand to support our health💃 Want to learn how to prioritize minerals through your diet and how to safely supplement magnesium?
